Stephen Spender on Argument or Experience, Auden, ‘Time and Tide'

This is the third volume by Auden containing poems published during the war and since his own departure to America. He has now returned to Europe, to investigate, with an American mission, conditions in Germany. The wheel has come full circle, and it is possible tentatively to consider what has been the profit and loss account in his poetry of his translation to America.
