ABSTRACT

George D. Painter (b. 1914), prize-winning biographer, was Assistant Keeper in charge of fifteenth-century printed books at the British Museum from 1954 to 1974. His books include ‘Marcel Proust, A Biography’ (2 vols, 1959, 1965), ‘William Caxton: A Quincentenary Biography’ (1976), and ‘Chateaubriand: A Biography’, vol. I: ‘The Longed-for Tempests’ (1977).
