ABSTRACT
Shapiro (b. 1913), a poet and critic, edited ‘Poetry: A Magazine of Verse’, 1950–6, and has been Professor of English at the University of California at Davis since 1968. His books include ‘V-Letter and Other Poems’ (1944), ‘The Poetry Wreck, Selected Essays 1950–70’ (1975), ‘Collected Poems 1940–1978’ (1978), and ‘An Essay on Rime’ (1945), which includes an anatomy of the Auden mode (see Introduction, note 50).
