Davie (b. 1922), a poet and critic, is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Humanities at Vanderbilt University. His publications include ‘Purity of Diction in English Verse’ (1952), ‘Thomas Hardy and British Poetry’ (1972), and ‘Collected Poems 1950–70’ (1972).
