A novelist, writer for children, poet, and playwright, Updike (b. 1932) has published many books including ‘Couples’ (1968), ‘The Centaur’ (1963), ‘Midpoint and Other Poems’ (1969), ‘The Coup’ (1979), and ‘Picked-Up Pieces’ (1975), which reprints this review on pp. 248–54 under the title Auden Fecit.
