Spears (b. 1916), who is an Executor of the Estate of W.H. Auden, edited ‘Sewanee Review’, 1952–61, and has been Libbie Shearn Moody Professor of English at Rice University since 1964. His books include ‘Dionysus and the City: Modernism in Twentieth Century Poetry’ (1970), ‘Space against Time in Modern American Poetry’ (1972), and ‘The Poetry of W.H. Auden: The Disenchanted Island’ (1963), an invaluable critical companion.
