A distinguished poet and novelist, Robert Penn Warren (b. 1905) was Professor of English at Yale University (1961–73). His most recent books include ‘World Enough and Time’ (1950), ‘Incarnations’ (1968), ‘Democracy and Poetry’ (1975), ‘Selected Poems 1923–75’ (1977), and ‘Now and Then: Poems 1976–8’.
