ABSTRACT

Renowned both as a poet and as a literary critic, Empson (b. 1906) is Emeritus Professor of English Literature at the University of Sheffield, where he held the Chair from 1953 to 1971. During the 1930s he taught at Tokyo National University and at the National University of Peking. His publications include ‘Seven Types of Ambiguity’ (1930), ‘Some Versions of Pastoral’ (1935), ‘Collected Poems’ (1955), ‘The Structure of Complex Words’ (1951), and ‘Milton’s God’ (1961).
