Critic, biographer, and writer of crime fiction, Symons (b. 1912) edited ‘Twentieth Century Verse’, 1937–9, and has been a ‘Sunday Times’ reviewer since 1958. His books include ‘The Tell-Tale Heart: The Life and Works of Edgar Allan Poe’ (1978), ‘Conan Doyle’ (1979), and ‘The Thirties: A Dream Revolved’ (1960; rev. edn, 1975), which includes extensive discussion of Auden’s work and influence.
