ABSTRACT

Lancashire, this represented under 5 per cent of total male employment. Lancashire, with its huge ‘occupied’ male population of over three-quarters of a million and the port of Liverpool within its boundaries, also contained nearly 20,000 males employed in seafaring, but Durham’s 9,000 were proportionally more significant. Durham, too, including as it did Sunderland, Stockton, the Hartlepools, and South Shields was also the major British shipbuilding county.
