ABSTRACT
Between 1789 and 1871 Paris earned the reputation as the European capital of urban revolution. Its economy had been dominated by smallscale consumer industry. Hence ‘artisans’ had been in the vanguard of popular militancy-furniture-makers, shoemakers, tailors, building craftsmen and skilled metalworkers.
