Budapest and the revolutions of 1918 and 1919

In the half-century which followed the setting-up of the Dual Monarchy in 1867, there was rapid capitalist development in Hungary. This transformed both Hungary’s economy and its society. The most intensive change took place in Budapest, which officially had been declared the capital of the country in 1873.
