ABSTRACT
The collapse of communist regimes in Eastern Europe has been met with high expectations concerning both the quality and the durability of the new democratic systems which-with remarkable ease and speed-replaced the ageing communist dictatorships. A few years after the ‘Fall of Nations’, however, there are growing fears that Eastern Europe may deviate from the road to democracy and end, at least for a period of time, under a version of authoritarianism.
