ABSTRACT

Florida's cultural record is heavily affected by geography and history. The state is growing explosively; it has a higher population density than California, is the fourth most populous in the USA and predicted to be the third most populous by AD 2000. Since the land development and tourist boom early in this century, this phenomenal growth has meant massive clearing of forests and wetlands and the draining and filling of swamps and coastlines, all for construction of retirement and vacation homes, office buildings, mobile home parks, and theme/amusement parks.
