Rescuing ordinary people's culture: museums, material culture and education in Brazil

Bourdieu (1992, p. 113) stressed recently that we have spoken too much about consciousness, too much in terms of representation. The social world does not work in terms of consciousness, it works in terms of practices, mechanisms and so forth. It is beyond dispute that people conform to or dissent from established views much more through practices than theories, through material than immaterial influences.
