The aim of this book is to bridge the gaps and to improve the cooperation between the above-mentioned disciplines. For this reason the descriptions of the techniques and methods all follow the same format:

1 Title 2 Basic theory and objective 3 Description of the experiment and procedure subdivided as follows:

(i) Principle of the experiment (ii) Strains, media and equipment required

(iii) Experimental procedure

(a) Interpretation, presentation of results, conclusions (e.g. with suggestions for further experiments)

(b) Literature references (as a starting point for more detailed study of the topic).
