ABSTRACT

Devising a methodology for assessing or improving the knowledge and practice of safety makes it necessary to relate attributes and concepts of human performance to the individual plant’s operational realities. A tool for achieving that link would be the development of indicators. World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) performance indicators are significant examples of this tool, because they are used by the nuclear power industry to monitor performance and progress and to set new goals for improvement, compare performance from one plant to the next, and detect possible need to adjust priorities and resources accordingly. A WANO performance indicator is based on one or more of the following criteria:

• It provides a quantitative measure of nuclear safety, plant reliability, plant efficiency, or personnel safety.
