ABSTRACT

Managing a classroom in which Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has a dominant focus is different from managing a classroom with other resources. This chapter considers what differences are and how teachers adapt their teaching to organise and manage the classroom in such a way as to promote effective learning. It has been noticed that many teachers appear to change not only their teaching styles but also their beliefs about learning when they introduce ICT elements into their lessons. Incorporating ICT into teaching takes time; few students in initial teacher education have come from rich ICT learning environments, and therefore their experiences are of a traditional text-based classroom. Teachers who operate within a particular paradigm in a non-ICT environment seem to change their whole view or approach to teaching once inside computer room or when they use computers. The use of ICT has been demonstrated to enhance motivation, which implies that there are fewer discipline problems when ICT is used.
