ABSTRACT

I figure the same can be said of the more familiar Western world Punch-, Kasper-, Guignol-, Petrushka-, Pulcinello-theaters. They still happen to be alive some place, they are sometimes brought back to life with artificial respiration, but their social conditions are no more; you need too many licenses and you are not allowed to play for money in the street, etc., etc. Throwing a baby out of the window is fun, as Punch does even in the days of Batman, but the distinct social and political criticism that went along with many of these wild shows needs a different street, a different audience and different cops than what we have here….
