ABSTRACT

The way in which public and private space is used, organized, shaped and furnished expresses societal coherence, as well as the meaning this space has for individuals. I understand the ‘shaping of public space’ as the outcome of the interaction between individuals and societal groups on a spatial dimension. The analysis of a multi-ethnic street festival in its local and regional dimensions will show whether such an endeavour can open up Möglichkeitsräume (‘spaces of possibilities’) for multi-ethnic co-existence in a city, not only during the festival but also in its day-to-day public life.
