ABSTRACT

A person is characterized by a number of needs. Certain needs are linked to the external environment, such as the need for privacy. Needs may be seen as causes.

Effects

Satisfaction of this kind of "environmental" needs results in feeling at home in an environment; dissatisfaction leads to alienation. Feeling at home or alienation may be seen as the effects of need fullfillment. Feeling at home, however, is more than the sum of a number of separate need fullfillments. It is the result of an integration of these fullfillments, whereby the integration has properties which the separate fullfillments have not, such as the development of roots.
