The legal concept of ‘damage’ (qv) is to a very large extent linked to these normative documents.
It is useful to divide normative documents according to the areas they mainly deal with:
• norms pertaining to zoning or physical planning: land use such as reservation of areas for distinct purposes, spaces to be left intact and the like;
• norms pertaining to town planning or urbanisation: distance between buildings, distribution of private and public areas, rate of services in different sectors, overall aesthetic aspects, permissible height above ground level, admissible depth of constructions; and
• technical regulations, pertaining to the building within its own site.
