It's very clear that Thomas Jefferson saw himself as a designer. You realize that he saw himself as a designer clearly when you look at his tombstone, which he designed. On it he remarked three things, and three things only. It says “Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of American Independence, author of the Statute of Religious Freedom for the State of Virginia” which became the Bill of Rights, and “Father of the University of Virginia”. Three things he considered his legacies. He didn't record any of his activities. He didn't say “President of the United States, Minister to France”. He simply left messages about his legacies.
