ABSTRACT

The value concept is presented as a higher order thinking process which is innately ingrained in all humans. Using the Miles’ method of defining and relating function to cost as a form of value expression can improve individual and organizational effectiveness. The system that Miles originated as “Value Analysis” has spread throughout the world. Specific variances have evolved in the Orient as a result of the East-West cultural gap.

Examples are presented from four widely differing areas: Product, Construction, Organization/Procedures and Overhead (Utilities).

The history and evolution of Demings’ Quality Concepts and Miles’ Value Concept and their integration into Japanese business is presented and the major similarities and differences are discussed.

The Miles’ Value concept as a key communication tool is presented. It’s use in improving cross cultural understanding is also discussed.

Applications of the value concept in Architectural Management, or any form of management, are discussed and the benefits identified.
