ABSTRACT

This paper briefly considers some of the work which has been undertaken on information systems for the construction industry and also considers some of the essentials of coding systems and brings these concepts together with some comments on the use of information systems and coding for the recording of expenditure on building maintenance. The author has been involved with colleagues in the Research Unit of Bristol Polytechnic on major projects funded by the Hong Kong Housing Authority and the Science and Engineering Research Council of the United Kingdom both of which projects deal with the acquisition and the use of maintenance cost data for management purposes.
