ABSTRACT

This paper examines the development of a Distance Learning version of an existing, successful MSc course. Attention is paid to initial marketing, internal factors which prompted attention to distance learning and the anticipated advantages. As with many novel ventures, the full implications were not realized at the outset.

The course incorporates workbooks, readings, textbooks, video tapes and audio tapes as the major distance learning materials, all of which are supplemented by a one week residential school requirement for each of the four taught modules.

There now exist 3 modes of study of one single course. As a single course, the continuous assessments, case studies and examinations are common throughout although the periods of study required by students vary depending upon the mode of study adopted. Under distance learning, the speed of study is dictated by students with the overriding stipulation that the maximum duration required to complete the course is 5 years.

To date, the distance learning mode has attracted over 100 student registrations, all of whom must meet the stringent entry requirements for any MSc course offered by the University. Results of students assessments has been very encouraging, manifested by the complementary comments afforded by the external examiner.
