ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the cost consequences when professional clients use different modes of contracting out design activities. Three basic modes of design production are compared: in house design department, contracting out to an independent design firm and the design/- construct scheme. The question stated is: “Which should be used regarding overal efficiency?” Tentative answers point to the conclusion that either in house design or the design/-construct scheme should be used. Contracting out to an independent design firm is not expected to deliver the best solution.
