ABSTRACT

The paucity of code requirements related to durability and the appropriateness of addressing the subject in the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) recently resurfaced as issues for discussion. The present paper discusses the need and appropriateness of durability requirements in building codes. The paper identifies various issues that should be addressed by durability requirements, and compares, with an emphasis on building envelope elements, provisions in the building codes of several countries and in various parts of the NBC.
