ABSTRACT

These are the opening lines of a story featured by the February 2002 issue of INNew York (p. 27), a glossy magazine targeting the innumerable visitors to New York City. And sure enough, thousands upon thousands of spectators – both Asian and non-Asian – showed up and rubbed shoulders on this sunny winter afternoon. The crowd listened to the deafening drum beat, ogled at young ladies dressed up in colourful costumes, saluted marching veterans, and cheered processing community organizations such as the National Chinese Welfare Council, Better Chinatown Association, the Local 23-25 UNITE union of female garment workers, and the Asian American Postal Employee Association. Before and after the parade, the visitors shopped around, bought stuff from vendors, and enjoyed a fabulous lunch in one of the many restaurants. Happy New Year!
