ABSTRACT
This chapter identifies problems that students commonly face during a research degree, and discusses some potential solutions. The types of problems that arise during a thesis vary. They range from disagreement between supervisor and student over matters of feedback, shifting expectations and timelines, to matters that relate to the student’s own self-esteem, motivation and personal circumstances. The chapter is structured to cover a broad range of these problems, posed as typical student questions, followed by general comments and specific advice. The chapter concludes with advice on how to proceed if your relationship with your supervisor breaks down to the extent that you want to change supervisors. We hope that none of these problems will happen to you, but if they do, the chapter offers suggestions and practical advice.
