ABSTRACT
The selection of a supervisor is one of the most important steps in starting a postgraduate thesis. Effectively managing your relationship with that supervisor is then a critical component of a successful candidature. There will be few, if any, people who will understand and share with you the trials and successes of the research journey in the way that your supervisor will. On the other hand, both the student and the supervisor can become frustrated and unhappy with the other’s perceived and/or actual shortcomings. In the worst cases, the relationship can deteriorate to the extent that it damages the student’s thesis.
