ABSTRACT

Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) was among the first illnesses used to define AIDS, and in 1997, it remained the most common cancer among persons with AIDS. A tumor of blood vessels, KS usually manifests itself on the skin as pink, red, purple, or brown flat patches on the face, hands, arms, and legs, but it can spread to the lungs and gastrointestinal tract. An uncommon cancer before the AIDS epidemic, KS affects approximately 18 to 40 percent of patients with AIDS.
