ABSTRACT

It is unfortunately true that broken spirits can also suffer from broken bodies. Many asylum seekers and refugees have been subjected to extreme physical hardships ranging from torture to rape to deprivation of food, clothing, and shelter. Physical trauma and psychological trauma are “conjoined twins” that often require special medical and psychiatric attention. Part VI addresses these three interrelated aspects of these medical needs. First, what types of medication are useful for asylum seekers and refugee patients who are suffering from psychiatric difficulties as a result of their experiences? Second, are there special considerations relating to medical and psychiatric difficulties that should be taken into consideration in surgical approaches to victims of torture and PTSD? Third, what are the psychosocial rehabilitation needs of asylum seekers and refugees?
