ABSTRACT

Midway in this amiable decade of the twenties there was an appalling financial crisis. It exploded suddenly.

The Bank which provided most of the family fortune had had a fairly prosperous career since its establishment in 1773. It had first functioned as Marlar, Lascelles, Pell and Down. When Marianne’s father entered it in 1784 it changed its name to Down, Thornton and Free. At his death in 1815 it had passed out of Thornton control. Young Henry longed to join it, but he was only fifteen and nothing could be done.
