ABSTRACT

The current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition-Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000) recognizes two eating disorders, anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). A third disorder, binge eating disorder (BED), while not yet accepted as an independent diagnosis, is widely recognized. Currently, BED is classified as a specific example of “eating disorder not otherwise specified.”
