ABSTRACT

We live in a fast changing world. One purpose underpinning teaching must surely be to help to prepare pupils for future adult life. Proponents of lifelong learning rightly recognise that reaching adulthood does not signal the end of learning. As Etienne Wenger (1999: 11) succinctly puts it: ‘Learners will inherit the earth. Knowers will find that they inhabit a world that no longer exists.’ Change in the world of education and beyond is constant and inevitable.
