ABSTRACT

To be effective in helping their pupils achieve their full learning potential, an understanding of how learning happens for individuals is vital (Burton, 2001). Through your practice in the classroom, your reading and reflection on the ideas of others and your discussion with other teachers, you have developed a range of knowledge about learning and the differences between the approaches, motivation and competences of your pupils. This chapter explores briefly some of the research that has been undertaken to reveal more about human learning with particular reference to school-age children. For a more in-depth overview of learning theories please refer to Bartlett et al. (2001), Chapters 4 and 5.
