ABSTRACT
In 1773, the Manchester Conversation Society met at the Angel Inn in the Market-Place to debate the question: ‘Whether are the more difficult to bear, the Passions of the Mind, or the Maladies of the Body?’ The Society concluded that ‘The maladies of the body’ were the greater burden.1
