ABSTRACT

Performance artist, poet, and playwright Jessica Hagedorn was born and raised in the Philippines. Her debut novel was the Dogeaters, which The New York Times Book Review deemed “sharp and fast as a street boy’s razor,” a turbulent story of movie stars, junkies, and political assassination as seen through the lens of a young Filipina’s loss of home and immigration to America. Danger and Beauty is a collection of short fiction and poetry from her first books, including Dangerous Music, Pet Food and Tropical Apparitions, and new writings. Her multimedia theater pieces have been presented at New York’s Public Theater and include Holy Food, Teenytown and Mango Tango; she has been a commentator for a syndicated weekly news magazine on public radio.
