ABSTRACT
What are the most important sensuous mediators between the ‘social’ and the ‘natural’ worlds? What is the role of the senses in leading people to interpret certain places as ‘natural’ and others as ‘unnatural’? How do the various senses enable people to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable changes? What senses are involved in the production of different leisure spaces, such as gardens, parks, beaches, moorlands and so on? How are different leisure spaces actually sensed by visitors?
