ABSTRACT

In this century education in West Germany has passed through three innovatory movements of basic significance. Although they were only partially successful they have made a marked impression on formal education within the country's schools and other institutions. As a result of comprehensive changes in the socio-economic, political and cultural structures these innovatory movements have, furthermore, had a strong influence on informal education. Reciprocal effects between developments in formal and informal education can be established by finding examples in the behaviour patterns of people at school, in family life, in business and in the street.
