ABSTRACT

The UK government has introduced a new class of health care centres that are dedicated to the delivery of diagnostic or routine elective services. Originally known as Diagnosis and Treatment Centres, such facilities are now being given the term Treatment Centres (TCs) by the government. Some of these TCs consist of entire newly built hospitals and others are housed within existing hospitals. This chapter describes how a mathematical model was used to support the planning process surrounding the delivery of elective general surgical services at one of these new centres.
