ABSTRACT

This chapter will look at food issues from two perspectives – the global and the personal. This provides the opportunity to consider the sustainability issues raised by food production for the world’s population as well as the personal impact of individuals’ food choices on the planet. The first of these perspectives involves consideration of issues around world food production, population, environmental impacts and sustainability. The second involves personal understanding of food issues and their direct impact on individuals. Each perspective is considered in the light of the understandings that students might gain through a critical mathematics education as outlined in the opening chapter.
