ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the problem of conceptualizing infrastructures and describing their effects on the economic performance of innovation systems, with a focus on the role of public policy in developing and maintaining such infrastructures. The chapter consists of two parts: a discussion of the technical and economic characteristics of physical and knowledge infrastructures, followed by a more empirical overview of the ways in which knowledge infrastructures actually contribute to the performance outcomes of systems.
