ABSTRACT
Philosophy is, etymologically, the love of wisdom. It is hard to love what one does not know and so natural for philosophers to be interested in the twin issues of what wisdom is and how to attain it. On these issues there grew up in antiquity a large body of thought and practice, some, though by no means all, of which made its way into the Middle Ages.
