ABSTRACT
What is most surprising, looking back at Desert Hearts (1985) from the vantage-point of the 1990s, is that it did not prove to be the first in a long line of popular lesbian romance films with ‘happy endings’. Instead, sadly for some, it continues to stand out in significant isolation as practically the first and, so far, the last film of its kind in contemporary American cinema.
