ABSTRACT

This essay describes two successful regeneration projects carried out in Great Britain. Key issues common to both of these projects were the early involvement of the full design team, the provision of public and private financial support, and clients who had vision, courage and recognition that this type of project takes time to mature. It can also be shown that these regeneration projects were a trigger for further development. The two projects present very different characteristics and problems: one is a derelict and disused dock area in Salford in the north-west of England, and the other is a closed landfill site near Heathrow airport, 25 miles from the center of London.
