ABSTRACT
Retirement is a complex social institution. It is a significant event in an individual's life cycle and affects the workplace, the labour market, and the economy. When many individuals retire within a relatively short time, or when there are significant labour market or public policy shifts — as is the case in an ageing society — retirement becomes a major public policy issue (Yang and Klassen 2010).
