ABSTRACT

The corrosion of ferrous metals is linked to a basic chemical cycle, smelting ores to form iron and steel and thence reversion to rust to complete the cycle. Interrupting this process by design or protective measures requires an understanding of the precise nature of corrosion. This is a topic which must be addressed by designers in any constructional field where iron and steel are employed - by marine architects in ship building, by car designers, by structural engineers in bridge and oil rig construction and by the building team. These notes are aimed at the latter, namely architect, builder, engineer, surveyor and the client, who ultimately bears the cost.
