ABSTRACT

In this chapter the principles set out in chapters 11 and 12 are developed with reference to structural systems for multistorey building frames. The structure is the key to the design of modern multi-storey buildings and the factors affecting the choice of the floor framing system with respect to gravity loads are outlined. Structural systems to resist wind and other lateral loads are introduced. These are developed more fully in chapter 15 which deals with high-rise buildings in which the lateral bracing system becomes a more critical element as the building height increases. The need for any framing system to be sufficiently robust to cope with accidental and unexpected loadings is dealt with, and practical advice on the choice of floor systems and vertical bracing systems is included.
